Naval Submarine School
Submarine Officer Basic Course (SOBC) is an 8 week curriculum for all junior officers reporting to division officer tours aboard submarines. Division officers will also attend the Basic Officer Leadership Continuum for the two weeks prior to SOBC. Supply Corps officers reporting to submarines as department heads attend SOBC as well as the Submarine Officer Indoctrination Course, which is a one week course, prior to SOBC.

Submarine games and sims - SUBSIM Review
For those who served on board submarines deep inside enemy lines in the Pacific War, or against the massive convoys of the Atlantic War, or under the desolate ice caps in the Cold War, survival was no game. There was the real possibility that a few well-placed ash cans or an ASW torpedo could hole your boat and you would be crushed in the cold, dark depths. Computer submarine simulations are as close to undersea warfare as most people will ever reach.

Operating a Nuclear Submarine
More than a hundred men eat, sleep, work and take time off in a steel tube for months at a time. Work is focused around several different areas and activities of a nuclear submarine; the attack center—the underwater equivalent of a surface ship's bridge—is the brain, where all of the decisions are made and passed along to the crew. The sonar room represents the ears and eyes of a submarine, where outside sounds are heard, processed and interpreted. The maneuvering room controls the nuclear reactor and converts its heat to energy for powering the submarine's systems and propulsion through the underwater environment.

The American fleet submarine may arguably be called the most successful naval weapon of World War II. The aircraft carriers got all the publicity, but it was the submarine fleet that destroyed most of the Japanese merchant fleet, isolating the home islands, crippling Japanese industry, and preventing resupply and reinforcement of Japanese island garrisons.

Submarines, Fast Attack Nuclear Submarines, Fleet Ballistic
The submarine USS SCORPION (SSN-589) sank May 22, 1968 in more than 10,000 feet of water about 400 miles southwest of the Azores. SCORPION is in two major sections.

The forward hull section including the torpedo room and most of the operations compartment is located in a trench that was formed by the impact of the hull section with the bottom. The sail is detached. The aft hull section including the reactor compartment and engine room is located in a separate trench that was formed by the impact of the hull section with the bottom. The aft section of the engine room is inserted forward into a larger diameter hull section in a manner similar to a telescope.

Submarine Recycling Program
When a ship/sub is selected for recycling, it is first "Inactivated". This means the process of scrapping is started. It is placed in dry dock and fuel is removed from the Nuclear Reactor. The ship/sub is still in commission (even though inactivated) and is referred to as USS (Name). Once the fuel is removed, the ship is decommissioned and referred to there after by name only, or ex-name. (i.e. Ex Ray, Ex James Madison) Presently, submarines are completely scrapped once they enter the dry-dock. They are no longer refloated. Once a submarine enters the dry dock, their fate is sealed. Only scrap metal leaves the dry-dock. No surface craft have been recycled yet, but four are waiting in line with everything above the main deck removed.

From the end of World War II in 1945 to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Cold War dominated international affairs. It was a global struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union. Although the Cold War was sometimes fought on the battlefield, it involved everything from political rhetoric to sports. Overshadowing all was the threat of nuclear war. The United States adopted a policy of deterrence. It threatened any would-be attacker with nuclear annihilation. To make the threat credible, the United States developed what came to be called the "Strategic Triad" of nuclear forces—long-range bombers, land-based missiles, and submarines. Each force independently could inflict catastrophic damage and devastating casualties on an enemy.
