[Michael DiMercurio / USSDevilfish.com] Michael DiMercurio Fan Club Newsletter -- NOVEMBER 2003

Greetings to all Michael DiMercurio fan club members! Since this is my first newsletter, I thought I’d start out by making a confession. I am, what all submariners’ call, a “Non-Qual Air Breather.” Ouch, it hurts to say that, but it is the truth. In my own defense, I will also say that I have read all of Mr. DiMercurio’s novels at least four times and I am in the process of reading, “The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Submarines.” This is going to take me awhile because I want to be as “Heavy” (a term submariners’ use to describe someone who is knowledgeable), in basic submarine procedures, terminology and inner-workings as possible. I mean, how can I be president of this fan club if I don’t know the difference between a hatch and a door, or the Head and the crew’s mess?

Honestly, nuclear submarines fascinate me, but I am learning just how complex and difficult they are to run and maintain. Like most of you, I admire these machines and the men who serve aboard them so much that I read as much about them as I can. This is the beauty of Michael DiMercurio’s novels. Not only do we get to read wonderful, thrilling stories but we also learn about what life is really like aboard a nuclear submarine. That’s the difference between reading a Clancy novel and a DiMercurio novel. DiMercurio readers know that he was actually in the U.S. Navy and served aboard a nuclear sub as an officer. So, the DiMercurio reader knows his novels are not just pure fiction, but based on actual experience in real life.

As president of this fan club I want to help bring you the inside scoops on Mr. DiMercurio’s novels, his career in the navy, little known facts about submarines and comments from the man himself, Michael DiMercurio. But, that’s not all. I want this fan club to be fun and a place where DiMercurio fans can come together, share stories, laugh and feel a sense of community. After all, that’s why we’re here, because we love Michael DiMercurio’s novels. We share a common interest in submarines and how they function in combat. I believe we all long to go to sea and dream of what it would be like to actually be a submariner. So, welcome to the Michael DiMercurio Fan Club and let the voyage begin.

Best wishes and fair sailing.

Tim Sharp
President,
