[Michael DiMercurio / USSDevilfish.com] March 2004 DiMercurio Fan Club Newsletter

As the self-proclaimed number one fan of Michael DiMercurio and president of his fan club I have given much thought as to why I am so fascinated with submarines. Is it the sheer power, beauty and sophistication of these machines that thrills me? Is it the men who serve aboard these stealthy beasts of the deep with courage, conviction and calm, professionalism that inspires me? The only answer possible for me is, yes, all the above.

Submariners are a culture unto themselves. The prestigious Dolphins they wear upon their chests tells the world that they are special, a breed apart. The boats they serve aboard are given nicknames like "sewer pipe," "pig boat," and "black pig." Now, me personally, I would never refer to a submarine with such names. I am not a submariner; I've never earned a set of Dolphins. As a civilian I figure I don't have the right to use names that might be misunderstood as derogatory to a group of men and a profession that I deeply respect. However, to the submarine veteran these are names of affection and pride. I cannot possibly understand the world of the Silent Service because as I am learning, life aboard a submarine is something that must be experienced to be fully comprehended.

This is why I am a Michael DiMercurio fan. His novels are written for the enjoyment of the techno-thrill seeking reader to be sure, but he also wants to give his readers a real sense of what being inside a nuclear sub is really like. Michael not only writes compelling, adventurous stories, he also writes in detail about the men and the machines. He even goes so far as to tell us what a sub smells like inside and how good, but fattening the food is. To this nonqual air breather that is priceless information!

Some of you may have wondered how a civilian like me ever got to be president of Michael's fan club. Well, first of all, I read all of his novels. Now you're saying, "so what, so did I." Okay, fair enough, but I have read all of Mike's novels five times over! Then, I took advantage of one of the truly remarkable things that all DiMercurio fans have at their disposal; I emailed him. Time and time again, I emailed Mike with comments and questions and each and every time he replied to me personally. Last Fall I emailed Mike to thank him for taking the time to reply to my letters personally and that's when I broached the idea of starting a fan club for him. Honestly, I have to say that Mike wasn't so sure it was such a good idea because even though he has fans all over the world, he really doesn't like the spotlight and prefers to work in the shadows. Sounds like a typical submariner, doesn't it? But, Mike saw that I had a passion for this project and gave me his go-ahead. That's when he put me in touch with Bill Parker, president of Parker Information Resources, who designed and maintains the USSDEVILFISH.COM web site. Bill is a real professional and has treated me with the utmost courtesy and respect and without him this fan club could not exist.

Now if for some reason you have not read all of Mike's novels yet, let me make a suggestion. My personal favorite DiMercurio novel is, "ATTACK OF THE SEAWOLF." This book has it all and I mean everything any techno-thrill loving enthusiast would want. There's a special-op with an LA-class boat that goes terribly wrong with Michael "Patch" Pacino's Annapolis roommate in command. Admiral Dick Donchez knows there's only one person with the experience and guts to handle this crisis and that's, Patch Pacino. There's a hitch though, Pacino has retired from the Navy. Donchez realizes there's only one way to get Pacino out of retirement; tell him the truth about what has happened to his best friend and give him command of the U.S. Navy's most lethal and sophisticated warship, the USS Seawolf. I'm telling you all, this is a great book! I urge anyone who has not read this book yet to go out and buy it ASAP! I promise, you will be happy that you did. Then, after you've read this awesome book drop Mike and me an email and let us know what you think.

Oh, and don't forget about our weekly Thursday night chat sessions in the Sonar Shack Chat Room at 9:00pm Eastern. I'll see you all there.

Best wishes and fair sailing.
