Ah, Spring, baseball, hot-dogs and cold beer! The long Winter months are
finally over and for those of us in the Snow Belt, it's time to pitch all the
crappy novels we read during those cold, dark, dreary days in the trash. Each
Spring I'm amazed at how many terrible books I read just to preoccupy my mind
and beat down the cabin fever.
To be fair, there were one or two entertaining tales of submarine daring-do,
but none had the submariner's soul that all DiMercurio novels drip with. If I've
learned anything in all my readings about the Silent Service, it is that I
can tell the difference between an author who has been a submariner and one
who has not. Michael DiMercurio spoils his readers with authentic, insightful
stories that often out-class other authors who try to wing it with nothing
more than imagination and sterile research.
Here again, is one huge difference between Michael DiMercurio and other
authors who have never actually served aboard a submarine. Michael can impart onto
his readers a mental picture of a nuclear powered submarine that goes beyond
sheer imagination because he has lived it personally. Unlike many other
authors, Michael has earned his own set of gold Dolphins, which gives him a
personal insight that cannot be duplicated by taking VIP tours or pleasure cruises or
interviewing crew members. So, how can you or I compare Michael's technical
and tactical knowledge of submarines to that of other authors with no
real-life experiences? The answer, we can't!
The point I'm trying to make here is that while I do read other authors, I
have yet to read one who can write a novel that totally captivates me the way a
DiMercurio work does. Simply put, Michael is the best, bar none.
I know there might be some people who say that I have to write wonderful,
glowing statements about Michael and his novels because I am president of his fan
club. Wrong! Michael didn't recruit me to plug his novels, I went to him
and asked him to let me do this fan club because I have read his and other author's
books and to me there was no comparison. Michael's books just blew me
away with their bold plots, believable characters and concise descriptions of
the inner-workings of the modern, nuclear submarine.
I challenge anyone to show me another writer whose novels are better than or
even as good as Michael DiMercurio's. If you take any novel written as a
whole, looking for authentic, realistic characteristics, I don't believe you'll
be able to beat a DiMercurio novel in the submarine combat genre. I dare you
to compare and invite you to try to prove me wrong. I eagerly await your email
replies.
Best wishes and fair sailing,
Tim Sharp
