JUNE 2004 DiMercurio Fan Club Newsletter

I've never considered myself a particularly lucky man, but recently a thought occurred to me. There are an estimated six billion people living on this planet and out of that, and perhaps more, I was lucky enough to be born in the United States of America.

From sea to shining sea, I can wander this great land a free man. I can worship my god any way I choose; I can read books and speak my mind on any subject without fear or penalty because our constitution gives me those rights. If I become displeased with the leaders of my country I can cast my vote to replace them and never worry that the State will send me to prison for voicing my dissenting opinions. In America, I am a free moral agent and in charge of my own destiny.

But, these freedoms are not free and they have been paid for in blood, time and time again. In a perfect world, all peoples of all nations would be free and there would be peace and harmony and good will to all men and women. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world and sometimes it becomes necessary to fight for our rights; fight to protect our lands, to help a friend or destroy an enemy.

America is a shining beacon to the world, a light that never dims and is the one, true hope for peace and freedom to all the people of this earth. This is not arrogance, it is simply the truth.

Again, in a perfect world, there would be no need for a strong military. But, as history has unfolded we have seen that America must maintain a mighty military capable of not only defending her own shores, but also able to project that power to anywhere in the world. Without the super power of the United States military the world would surely be dissected by evil, power hungry dictators, rogue nations lead by men intent on domination and terrorist groups that kill innocent men, women and children in the name of their god.

The next time you wonder if America needs to be spending hundreds of billions of dollars per year in military funding and national defense, I suggest you turn on your TV and watch your favorite cable news network. An hour later, you might just want to bend a knee and take a moment to thank God for America and while you're at it, say a prayer for our men and women in uniform because it is they who bleed and give the last full measure for our freedoms.
