1. THE 2004 NOVEL – PUBLISHER IN AN UPROAR
I’ve told you before about the 2004 novel, delivered two
months ago. I can’t yet reveal the title, but trust me, it is very
cool. Since its delivery, the leading military editor in
military fiction, Doug Grad, did his initial read-through and
immediately wrote me a note that it was fantastic. He
returned the manuscript in mid-November with minimal
edits. I sent it back in a few days. Other people reading the
work at the publisher’s offices are excited. Without doubt,
this is the best Michael DiMercurio novel ever written!
Editor Doug Grad’s comments: “Awesome! Great job on
TITLE: CLASSIFIED [not the real title]. The hard work
paid off, and you’ve set a new standard for yourself (which
I’m going to hold you to now!). The action was exciting, the
pace was brisk, and the characters are well drawn and
believable. I think you handled the sex scenes well, and
[deleted since it is a plot spoiler] really makes Vornado out
to be human, and three-dimensional. He has to do some
pretty awful things in order to carry out his mission, and
things get very messy, but somehow it all works in the end.
So congratulations once again. I salute you!”
The book is a new series with new characters, modern
technology and some controversial subjects. You won’t
forget this one.
2. NEW AUTHOR PHOTOS. PLEASE VOTE.
The new author photo poses are posted on the website. Take
a look and write in with what you think. Please, don’t write
me and suggest I get a body double. The background in one
of the photographs is the ship control console from the
venerable Cold War fighting machine, the USS
Hammerhead, SSN-663.

3. STATUS OF 2005 NOVEL
Here’s the reason I haven’t exactly been prompt answering
your e-mails – the 2005 novel is due on November 1, 2004.
I delivered the last novel on time, less than one year from the
first sentence of the outline. This time last year, the 2004
novel’s first sentence was three weeks old. This year I’m
beating my head against the wall to understand the first
scene. Typically the first sentence of a new novel will take a
month to write, and the first page another month. You can’t
rush the baby, unfortunately. My time is being well-spent
staring at a blank blue screen until that sentence is on the
page and survives a week without me deleting it in disgust.
But one way or another, this novel will get a good start by
the first of the year.
This is the second in the Vornado series, and will build from
the tension established in the first novel. Yet, it will stand
alone so readers needn’t feel they should start from the
beginning.
That bears repeating for the Pacino series – don’t think you
need to start reading the series from the beginning, because
each book stands alone. It’s actually more fun reading them
from the last one written to the first.
4. EXTREMELY CANDID AUTHOR INTERVIEW.
CHECK IT OUT.
Author Christy Tillery French, a renown author in her own
right (and rumor has it she has a new sweet movie deal –
congrats Christy!), conducts author interviews. She was kind
enough to “research” me for her questions. My answers were
extremely candid, perhaps too much so.
Check out the interview at
http://www.ussdevilfish.com/interv.htm
Also check out Christy’s other author interviews at

Finally, take a look at Christy’s website and grab one of her
fine novels at
5. NEW MICHAEL DIMERCURIO COLUMN IN
MILITARY.COM. FIRST COLUMN ASKS, SHOULD
WOMEN BE ADMITTED TO SUBMARINE CREWS?
My first column in Military.com stirred the pot. The title:
“Women in Submarines?” Check it out and then write me an
e-mail with your opinion. I’m putting the opinions (and
some of my replies) together into the second column about
this subject.
If you’re a subscriber to this Patrol Report, I’ll send you a
notice when a new column is posted.

6. MICHAEL DIMERCURIO FAN CLUB
ESTABLISHED. CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE AND
THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT CHATROOM.
I admit it. When asked if I would allow a Michael
DiMercurio fan club, I had to chuckle a bit. I’m a complete
introvert, happiest when I’m in the dark in the middle of the
night writing a scene in a novel. But Tim Sharp, an avid fan
from way back, convinced me that it would the thing to do.
Tim and my webmaster, Bill Parker of parkerinfo.com,
arranged the fan club website. It’s amazing, so now I’m
completely sold.
Check it out at
http://www.ussdevilfish.com/fanclub/
Also, sign in Wednesday nights at 9:00 pm Eastern Standard
Time to the Michael DiMercurio Sonar Shack Chat Room to
discuss anything that’s on your mind. Most chat times I’ll be
there, either lurking or typing away. Again, the chat time is
Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. (2100 for the Navy, twenty-one
hundred hours for the Army, Happy Hour Plus 240 Minutes
for the Air Force, and for the Marine Corps, the big hand is
on the twelve and the little hand is on the nine – just kidding
there, Leathernecks!).

7. VISIT THE CONTROL ROOM, WHERE THE
NOVELS ARE WRITTEN.
I thought I’d take a few photos of “The Control Room,” the
house office where the novels are written, e-mails are
answered, patrol reports emanate and columns are
concocted.
Check it out at
http://www.ussdevilfish.com/cr.htm
***********************************************************************
A final word to everyone who has sent me an e-mail, please
accept my promise that I will get back to you as things slow
down a bit over the holidays. I read them all in real time, but
can’t always answer them for a few weeks. If you are
patient, you’ll hear back from me.
See you at test depth,
Michael DiMercurio

MORE! On EMERGENCY DEEP |
EMERGENCY DEEP: First in an electrifying new series from “A MASTER RIVALING TOM CLANCY.” --Publishers Weekly U.S. Navy submarine commander Peter Vornado is at the top of his game in underwater warfare when a devastating illness takes him out of the service and almost to the grave. Without duty, honor, or something to fight for, his life is as good as over. But the CIA needs a man like Vornado… A terrorist cabal has acquired a scrapped Soviet sub from the Cold War -- a technologically advanced failure still able to outrun any torpedo or enemy vessel and strike at will. With a nuclear payload, it will enable them to strike directly at Israeland throw the world into chaos. All that remains is to modernize the sub with the latest technology. Only one man can infiltrate the group, take the helm, and stop a holocaust -- a man who has already stared down death, and is ready to do battle once more… “Compelling and visionary. DiMercurio’s characters run as deep as his submarines themselves!” --Joe Buff, author of Crush Depth and Thunder in the Deep |
